Not even tragic trailer-trash Tracy can stop the force of femininity that
is Karen McDonald. She’s been planning her wedding since she were a
girl and has been grooming the groom for months so nothing is going to stop
her getting wed, nothing. Steve tells her he still loves her, despite
fathering Tracy’s baby and so Karen and Steve say their vows once again in
front of aunty Eva, Liz and Andy to become Mr and Mrs McDonald II, The Revenge.
Andy announces the news to the stunned guests in the bar and the reception
goes ahead as planned with speeches and tears and all the rest of the usual
before the newly-re-weds drive off in a horse drawn buggy for some honeymoon
salad. Lettuce be alone.
Back on the street the Croppers know their time with Patience is limited
and sure enough, Tracy comes bawling at their door demanding her baby back.
Hayley stuns her into silence when she tells Deirdre, Ken and Blanche about
the twenty five grand deal. Despite everything, Ken and Deirdre tell
Tracy they’ll support her but Ken goes to see Roy for a chat. He knows the
baby’s better off with them but tells Roy that the law will see things differently.
The Croppers are broken but have to do what’s right and Roy takes Patience
back to Tracy then collapses in tears outside of the café. Knowing
when they’re beat, the Croppers take to Whitby for a few days r & r. “The
sea can be very restorative.” muses Roy. Indeed, it can. Tracy
tries to change the birth certificate but it’s harder than she thinks; to
change the dad’s name from Roy to Steve, the registrar needs a DNA test from
Steve – which he’s not obliged to give. Tracy also wants to change the
name Patience to Amy but officially has to do this by deed poll, it’s all
a lot more bother than she expected. She has mellowed, however, a little
towards Deirdre who’s revelling in being Granny Barlow. Granny McDonald
however, isn’t best pleased to be left out and she and Deirdre have words
on the cobbles after she has a go at Tracy, who might just have met her match
in Liz.
Elsewhere on the cobbles, Claire continues working as nanny to Josh and
Fred is disappointed that Ashley and she aren’t yet a couple, I say, it’s
a shame they’re not shacked up. Claire overhears Ashley tell Fred that
she’s an employee and he’s not prepared to have a relationship wi’her.
Upset, she walks out and is in much demand by Mrs Stamford who wants her
to look after baby Chelsea while she’s being waxed at the salon. Keen
as he is for Ashley to get himself a lady friend, Fred is even keener for
one himself and invites the merry widow Penny King to join him for a tete-a-tete
over beef wellington. She’s as lonely as Fred is and the two of them
decide to go on holiday to a cottage in the Lakes.
Maya the utter nutter gets to grips with smarmy Dev’s even smarmier dad
- Dev is clearly a chip off the old block. Dev’s dad thinks Maya’s
marriage material for his boy. Unfortunately Maya thinks the
same but Dev clearly doesn’t. Never mind, that doesn’t put off Maya,
she’s got it into her head that she and Dev are together forever whatever.
The two of them go out for lunch in a country pub and she tricks Dev into
sneaking off without paying. He’s angry and confused with her behaviour but
perhaps the best time to have an argument isn’t when she’s manic with her
foot hard on the accelerator of a sports car driving ten to the dozen through
winding country lanes. “Slow down, you’ll kill us!” he yells. “Then
tell me you want to marry me!” she yells back. Back at the flat
Dev tells her he wants her to leave. “I’m nuts about you.” she told him.
“You’re just nuts.” he replied - then I’m not quite sure what happened but
the next time I glanced at the screen they were all post-coital on the sofa
with him in a vest (a vest?) and then he’s begging her not to go.
Bev’s still chasing Charlie boy the chippy when he comes in the Rovers for
a drink and he has to tell her straight, he doesn’t want a relationship.
She’s not best pleased to see him chatting up Deirdre when he tries to get
his council contract for erections to the top of her tender pile.
Maria’s not best pleased to be living at the Platt’s with Gail, David and
the rabbit. She’s finding out just what a molly-coddling mother Gail is and
just how much Nick enjoys it.
And finally this week, Jason and Candice set up Harry and Eileen on another
date. Over a pizza, red wine and good conversation the two of them get
on like a house on fire – without the flames of passion. Harry suggests
they should wind up Jason that there’s romance in the air and Eileen agrees,
for the giggle.
And that’s just about that for this week.
